Prostate surgery<\/strong><\/em>, also known as prostatectomy, is a surgical procedure most commonly <\/span>used to treat<\/span> prostate cancer<\/span> by removing part of the man\u2019s prostate, or its entirety. It can also <\/span>be used to treat a condition called<\/span> Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia<\/a><\/span>, which causes an enlargement <\/span>of the prostate gland.<\/span><\/p>

The prostate is a gland that carries urine from the bladder to the penis, located in the male <\/span>pelvis, below the urinary bladder.<\/span><\/p>

Except for Prostate Cancer and Being Prostatic Hyperplasia, in which cases it is <\/span>recommended to<\/span> have a surgery as soon as possible,<\/span> there are some other reasons that a<\/span>ff<\/span>ect <\/span>and enlarge the prostate, that might urge the patient to have the procedure, like;<\/span><\/p>

– frequent urination, especially at night<\/span>
– painful or slow urination<\/span>
– prostate bleeding<\/span>
– inability to completely empty the bladder<\/span>
– urinary tract infections<\/span>
– inability to maintain a steady urinatio<\/span>n<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the <\/span>case of prostate cancer, prostatectomy might be used on its own, or along with hormone therapy or chemotherapy, depending on the patient\u2019s condition.<\/span><\/p>

During the procedure, the<\/span> entire prostate gland, or part of it, will be removed, along <\/span>with the seminal vesticles<\/span>, the sacs running through the testicles that produce semen. Most <\/span>types of prostatectomy procedures are performed under local anesthesia.<\/span><\/p>

There are several treatment options:<\/span>

the most common method, a few incisions will be made on the lower abdomen in order to remove the prostate. In some cases, if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, they will be removed as well.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

a process most commonly used to treat Prostatic Hyperplasia rather than prostate cancer. The surgeon cuts pieces of the enlarged prostates with a specialized tool. RECOVERY<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Patient is advised to stay in the clinic<\/span> 1 to 2 days<\/span> after any type of the procedures <\/span>mentioned above. After the surgery, the doctor will place a catheter that will help to drain the <\/span>bladder. This catheter will need to stay in place for approximately<\/span> 2 weeks thereafter<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the two weeks have passed a medical professional will assist in removing it, and the <\/span>patient will then be able to urinate on his own.<\/span><\/p>\n

After surgery, the patient should<\/span> refrain from smoking, exercise, lifting weights, and <\/span>sexual activity for 3 to 4 weeks<\/span>. The area of the surgery should be maintained clean to avoid <\/span>infection. There might be some<\/span> swelling<\/span>, and the patient could experience, at least for the<\/span> first <\/span>few days, some pain, irritation while urinating, and di<\/span>ffi<\/span>culty holding urine<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The recovery time will always depend on the<\/span> type of surgery<\/span> and the<\/span> patient\u2019s overall <\/span>health<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prostatectomy is a complicated procedure, and like with any surgery, some <\/span>complications might arise:<\/span><\/p>\n

– bleeding<\/span>
– infection<\/span>
– blood clots<\/span>
– painful urination<\/span>
